This book focuses on simple freshwater fishing. My aim is to get you and your kids "on the water" and catching fish. This is a SIMPLE guide. There are many excellent books written about the technical intricacies of fishing. This is not one of those books. This is a book to get you STARTED - to get you out there catching fish - to give you a little confidence while you’re trying something new. There are a million fishing “tricks” and techniques not included in this book. This is a reference guide to get you and your family involved in the sport of fishing without spending a lot of money or wasting a lot of time on things better left until you have about 150 bluegill under your belt (literally or figuratively).

Teach Your Kid to Fish When YOU Don't Know How eBook JD Mader

My son really wants to fish and I really want to be a cool Dad and take him. Problem is, with what I know currently (rumor has it that fish live in water) it would just demoralize me and disappoint him. So I took a chance on this book.

Winner! From the very first page it was clear that this is the beginner book we need. Clear and engaging writing style, simple instructions on what you need and don't, and an easy toolkit to have fun with your children. Perfect.

Teach Your Kid to Fish When YOU Don't Know How eBook JD Mader Reviews

This is a fun book. If you're new to the sport of fishing it will be very, very helpful. If you've fished for years as I have it'll make you want to get out there and enjoy once again the simple pleasures of fishing. We often take for granted where knowledge comes from. Was it a certain person, a family member or a "village" that took you in hand and imparted the necessary skills needed to fish. For instance, what is the fish thinking, what is it doing, what can I do to meet up with the fish? How do I deal with....you name it. Mader's book will give you a great start, important knowledge to enjoy the process of taking a child fishing, and, maybe most important....a smile.
I love the simplicity. Very down-to-earth and easy to read. I also like how he boils things down and offers useful, practical tips (as opposed to the long-winded descriptions I've seen in other manuals). The checklists are great too, especially the "what to bring" list. Although one essential thing was left out this book!!
Read this book for entertainment even if you never plan to fish or teach your kids or anyone else's kids to fish. It is delightful and funny. You will enjoy it as much as the author enjoys fishing.
This enjoyable little guidebook reminded me of being small and fishing with my brothers for sunnies no fancy gear and rolled-up bread balls for bait. I like how Mader broke it down, wrote about thinking like a fish and about making fishing into an experience that goes far beyond dropping a hook into the water. I’d recommend this for any grownup who wants to get outside and bond with the kids in the family – no cell phones, no TV, just having a little quiet time.
Clever guy, this Mader. The title made me want to buy the book, and I don't even have a kid. What I do have is an abiding respect for Mr. Mader's writing. His fiction has kept me on the edge of my chair more than a few days. Now, I can say his non-fiction is good, too. As he says, this isn't a definitive, last-guide-you'll-ever-buy, everything-you-should-know-about-fishing book. It's an introduction to the basics, including the reasons you want to fish with your kid, etiquette, and the stuff you should have to get started. The only tiny suggestion I would make is that a few drawings/photos of the tools might make the book even more informative, but it's good stuff. Thanks for sharing your love of this reason to get out into nature, and thanks for good writing!
The author is quite specific about the scope of this book and if you are a lifetime fisherman from a long line of bait sinking anglers you probably don't need this book. What we have here is a sharing of the love; a deep desire to pass along a tradition of story telling, communication with nature, and the pure love of the outdoors. No more and no less than a guide based on the simple hypothesis that fishing is an inexpensive, fun filled adventure to share with the entire family and pass along to future generations. It exists, in other words, to make fishing accessible to those who didn't have that experience as children themselves. As a side effect, the booklet may also inspire older single or childless people to venture out with a simple rod, line, and hook concoction to "drown worms."
Don't confuse this with a "for dummies" or "idiots guide to" type manual. Its much more personal, more basic, and more heartfelt than those excellent series. It reads like an over the backyard fence conversation with that friendly neighbor who is always tinkering in his garage when he is not "gone fishing." And that is exactly the right kind of guide for the fishing neophyte. If you have even been Ichthyologically curious, here is your in.
